Use five-year statistics to measure crime trends, professor urges

Professor Christopher Charles

Professor of Political & Social Psychology at The University of the West Indies, Christopher Charles wants the Jamaica Constabulary Force to report on crime trends, using five years of data rather than doing a comparison between the previous and current year.

From January 1 to February 1 this year, statistics from the JCF show that 80 fewer people were murdered this year when compared with the corresponding period last year.

Professor Charles claims that Jamaica is the only country that compares the current crime data with the previous year instead of looking at five years.

He says crime figures can fluctuate, and looking at five years of data will provide a more reliable and comprehensive view of crime trends.

Professor Charles also believes that it is too early to be declaring the 21.4 per cent decline in murders a success.

He was a guest recently on The Morning Agenda on Power 106FM with host Jodie-Ann Quarrie.
